Runner’s High
I’ve heard of something called a runner’s high (when an exausted athlete suddenly gets this burst of energy) but apparently the concept can be applied to homework too as I’ve learned this weekend. I had to write a 2,500 word first draft for my Advanced Magazine class and basically that was my only real homework that was due this weekend. Instead of just calling it a day, I decided to work on a bunch of projects that aren’t due until a few weeks from now. In addition to that, I decided to start making a scarf, I started a sewing project, I cleaned the house … and then I started to make a batch of cupcakes.
Turns out, this kind of behavior isn’t uncommon when people are really stressed. When someone reaches a certain threashold their endorphins kick into high gear and gives this jolt of energy and sense of euphoria. Also, 2003 study conducted at Georgia Tech found that their could be a link between prolong stress and the release of anandamide - a chemical that the body produces which has similar results to THC. Hmm…that would probably explain the cupcakes.
